I trust everyone had a wonderful IBS... Softplan had a spectacular booth location, anchoring a long aisle. Very well chosen.

 

 

I'm always a bit leery of starting up a new thread, given the wealth of knowledge already available to us here, but I have not been able to locate anything on the topic. Here's the gist: 

 

 

Layout - trapezoid shape, with one angled wall. This is the 8' hip wall.

 

Roof - 2/12 pitch, assume no heel height. From an 8' hip, this puts our left wall at 16'-0" tall, and rakes the sides.

 

3D - Because of the angled hip wall, my left gable end necessarily slants. My first instinct is to change my dominant reference wall to the 16'-0" wall... but because I only have one plane, I've no option for dominance.

 

Rake Hip - If I rake the hip wall to accommodate the span difference, the roof reference will default to the lowest point; 8'-0"

 

So - how do I get that damned roof hip to slope and provide a level high end (at 16'-0")?

Note:

 

Continuing to play with this, I may simply trace roof planes and offset them to fit... but it seems as though a solution should exist.

You can't have a level 8' end and a level 16' end and a constant pitch. Either you have to vary the pitch as the length changes or you have to have the rear gable wall sloped. You can't have both. Which is more critical too you. As far as I know, Softplan can NOT accommodate a variable pitch (so you effectively have a roof that twists). but you should be able to make the rear gable slope.

Personally I'd make the 8' hip wall one of the parallel ones - that way the roof is quite simple.
