Hey All,
Just wondered if anyone had any hints to be able to get a 3D rendering with a Craftsman style Garage Door with hardware/hinges? I can't seem to find anything anywhere!
Something like the attached photo.
Thanks in advance!

You can create a 3D model (in Softplan or Sketchup etc.) that you can link to a 2D representation, but it is a time consuming and tortuous procedure. You can create a custom door without hinges and handles - have a look at the tutorial here, but adding the hinges and handles is much more difficult - although to be fair it is possible.

You can't show them in 3D without creating a purpose designed 3D model in either Softplan or Sketchup. Basically you need to create all the parts out of solids, and assemble them, orientate them and colour them to suit. Then Save them as a 3DS model file in the 3D window, and then link the 2D opening with the 3D model you just created.
If you look at this thread, it shows how I used 3D shapes to create a Fypon pediment. The principle is the same though.

I would think you could easily draw the hinges, and other hardware, as "line work" as part of a custom elevation opening.. I'm out of the office at the moment or I'd take 4 minutes to whip up an example...
I thought so too Thomas. unfortunately it doesn't seem to do a great job. If you draw a shape as a hinge or a handle, you get a thick defined outline, but no ability to change the colour or anything. It does work - very slightly - after a fashion, but isn't really acceptable.

Hey Martin - I put these into Elevation Openings/Custom Doors (that seems to be where Softplan says you have yours located) but they don't work. I can't make an opening out of them.
Are these files supposed to go under "Elevation Openings", or "Openings"? Would you be able to include both the elevation openings and the opening files here?
Thanks again! This is great!

Randy's version is the quickest fix, Garaga has a really nice custom door creator that you can make really good custom doors and save them as a jpg and apply as a texture to the plain garage door but unfortunately the windows they offer are a silver reflective look instead of the black I usually use but they still work.

I have a few manuf of garage doors in my garage door folder.
this is an AMARR image on a PLAIN garage door.
not sure if it came with softplan v2016 or I got them somewhere.
many years of collecting images of all kinds.
many more - didn't check to see which ones had hinges on the image.
I did this quickly for this thread. I did have a white door with hinges
and others. you can always take the images into photoshop
and color the door.
i'm sure tom and others will figure out a good way to add
images to one of your garage door images without hinges.
how about copying and pasting images from another texture.

I tried the Amarr doors but when I try to change the color the handles do also. Randy-how did you get the door to be red and keep the hinges and handles black? Also what door is that exactly? I have not seen on in Amarr that has hinges. I can only find one that has handles.

I found those garage doors showing hinges and handles under the 'Amarr by design - wood' drop down menu.
I don't have any solutions for changing their colors though.
