why does a section line appear in the views menu, when it has been erased off the drawing

Not sure what you mean by a "section line" in the "views" menu. If you are referring to a Cross Section View e.g. A, then the view SHOULD be deleted when the associated section line has been deleted.

Go to Options>Visible Items and put a check in "display everything" to make sure it has in fact been erased.
