I am looking into purchasing softplan. Can you upload a photo and set it to a scale (according to a window/door) and trace over for quick design sketches ?

Are you asking if we can upload an image of a plan then trace over it for the floorplan?  The answer is yes, but I don't know of an auto scale function like you described.  I have done this in the past by having a line drawn that is the same length as a feature on the drawing, then adjusted the image to match that length (proportion of the image are maintained).  It's not super fast, but effective.  I have also cropped a plan to the edge of the walls then modified the entire width to reflect the total width needed.

I have used this for plans and sites both.  I use it much more for site plans.

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking more like taking an exterior photo, setting it to a scale and doing a quick renovation. i.e. A quick addition, adding trim, changing siding etc. to give a client a look at the potential curb appeal with minimal investment.

Sketchup does exactly what you are describing using photo match.

I don't believe SoftPlan has this function built in.  You could do it, but it would take a little more work:  Create a verticle plane, change the texture to a saved image, adjusty the size, then start placing items on it.

You should take a look at Edit > Adjust Size.

Yes it is easy to blend a actual photo with a drawing or model

here is an example:

(I think any program will require a little photoshop or similar as well)
