Hi,

We need a section added to the forum so we can "show off" a project or two. I don't know about you guys but I produce upwards of 100 plan sets a year. Most of them are run of the mill, repetitive ones that, at best, can be described as "Meh".

A new forum group (let's call it "The Ego Wall") would give us a place to show off the projects that we think are unique. It would also probably generate some discussions about techniques with questions about "How did you do that?".

How about it forum administrators?

Here are two of my favorite renderings -

I like the idea of an ego wall ...

Here's one of my favourites - which is quite similar to yours ...

or this one which is really simple, but has some nice textures ...

Excellent idea. Let's also include construction document sample pages, or plan set pages. They are sometimes just as much work as renderings.

I'm better at the renderings than the drawings.  I've seen some pretty amazing drawings in my years following this forum.  Much respect to that work!

But since you are sharing, here are a few renderings from years past that I've had fun with:

In addition to that I would love to hear some of the technical parts of the renderings (lighting, alias, effects, fog, etc.)  I was working on a rendering last night that I was trying to do a full render and every time I changed a setting to see what it looked like it took about 5 minutes to regenerate.  Would like to see tips from others.

I agree that the "ego wall" is a great idea!  Getting feedback and tips on our work would be invaluable.  Especially from the real pros here on the forum.

I also agree with Tom R. about taking forever to regenerate.  This is only a problem for me in RENDERED MODE, but a lot of things just can't be done with any other mode if you want to really see what you're doing.

It's still winter here in New England.  So here's my offering.  Critiques most welcome!

I think it would be great to see what you guys can do with Softplan.  I'm always a little reluctant to show what I do compared to you real pros (especially after the tech guys told me I was doing it wrong!!

That being said...I wanted to get into this with you so I've included a couple of my houses.

Really nice work Sam.

I feel a little overwhelmed ... I don't normally get to work on really expensive houses, so although I can get some okay renderings, the houses themselves are much simpler, and therefore not quite so impressive.

Paul-since you asked I would suggest framing your shot more.  See how Sam and I use the trees to "creep" into the edges?  It helps frame the house.  Also the angle of view is important.  I like Sam's left version (very nice detailed house) better than the one on the right.  Dont get me wrong they are both good, it is the angle that has better view on the left than the right.  Also like the smoke from the chimney Paul in your winter scene.  How did you do that?  Very cool

Any one have any good tips on night renderings?  Ive seen a few and they look real good.

Martin-I like your kitchens.  Is the grey tones an after filter or did you do that in Softplan?

Tom, thanks so much for the feedback.  I agree with framing the shot with foliage, but this is winter - note the dormant tree on the left.  I was going for a cozy home in a bleak and barren landscape (New England winter).  C'mon up and see for yourself, haha.  It never made it above 19 degrees here today, and WINDY!  I was hoping the lighting and smoke from the chimney (airbrushed in in Photoshop) would add to the welcoming feeling of the house.

Here's one in the summer - different feeling.  Here I try to show a cool summer day in the very early evening.  AHHHH, leaves and flowers!

Sam, I love the reflections in your windows, something I'm trying to figure out.  Any tips?

Paul

No filters or other software. I just like the way the whites and greys work together. There are just a few splashes of colour in the shot too - like the burgundy in the floor tiles.

It takes a few tries to get the natural light and the interior lighting just right. The pot lights drive me crazy every time getting the right settings. Everything else I just play with the various surface settings, primarily the "Specular" and the "Emissive" levels which affect the way they change the lighting.

Here is another house with the grey theme. The pictures show the family room, dining room and kitchen areas. I threw in a shot of the front too.

Hi,

Play with the level of "Reflectivity" settings in the glazed surface settings. The higher the number the more opaque the reflection is. The reflection is really just the software letting the background image "bleed" through.

They only work when you use render mode...other than that...just play with the reflectivity slider.  Hope that helps....
