I noticed that when an Overlay is set to a lighter pen, it doesn't seem to apply to the overlay openings. Default pen is 2 (0.20)- I set to 4 (I have it at 0.05)

I believe this was the same in 2016.

It would also be great if we had the option to not show openings on the overlay- but leave the gap in the wall- like it does when you turn off opening visibility on the floor plan.

There are a couple other improvements that would be great with overlays:

  • Allow overlays to export to DWG- for sending to engineer, etc.
  • Allow custom polygon shaped cropping of an overlay (or any other cropped drawing/ view)- so you could show a live overlay of just what you want without cluttering other parts of the drawing- like showing the lower Main floor on a 2nd floor plan or Roof plan- but only the lower parts that extend outside of the 2nd floor plan.
  • Allow full control of what objects are displayed and how they are displayed- control over line style and weights- so you could have only plumbing symbols show, or only interior walls, etc.

Maybe some of this could be done with using plan sets like multi-drawings- referencing different drawing on top of another to keeping things 'live' and updating.

jI use multi drawings to overlay drawings all the time.  Use one as a reference and do editing on the other.  Using a site plan and floor plan for instance,so I can design within the setbacks.  Particularly helpful when I have a very irregular lot.

This would be nice.  I like to use overlay for some things like roof designs.  To get the openings lighter I believe it is 'Shapes' in which I had to change the pen setting.  The problem is that it changes all of the shapes.  I don't think I've tried this since upgrading to 2018, but it definitely needs improving if not addressed already.
