I ssved a project as a revision, then saved the revision as a revision (are you following me?)  Now, I want to use the revision of the revision as my project.  One of the confusing things is that each project file has the same name! Do I save the revision file over the main file?

NEVER ... NEVER edit revision files ...

 

Normally you would work on a project and when you think it's correct, save it.

 

If you have to revise it, SAVE PROJECT REVISION. This takes a snapshot of your project as it is (so you can return to a specific spot if you need to) - then REVISE the original project, save when it's revised to your liking.

 

If you need to revise again, SAVE PROJECT REVISION, then REVISE the original project ... and so on and so on etc. etc.

 

If you need to go back to a specific revision, Save the latest project as a PROJECT REVISION then AND ONLY THEN, open the relevant revision and save it as the current project.

 

You should ONLY EVER need to work on the current project.

Kieth, with all due respect, I think this is further confusing me. We were trying to look at design alternatives, which is what I thought the "save revision" was for?  In previous versions it wold rename the file revision 01. 02, etc. Now it doesn't! So, I have three projects with the same name.  However I did rename them.  But, I would like to not have to drill down the revision files every time i am saving or opening something.   I'm not sure if there is an easier way to look at alternatives, i.e. three different master bath configurations?  And now that I have this messy configuration, can I just save over the original file? Any advise?

Can you use building options?  I did that with a current remodel project.  Each alternative I did as a different option.  Then I could just turn them on and off as needed looking at what we wanted.

Thanks Tom - I am just getting back to using SoftPlan (after years of ACAD and Revit) so I wasn't aware of that feature.  Sounds like something very Revit-esque as they have "Design Options".  My dangling issue still remains....can I save over  the original file with the revision file?

I would either save the floor plans as separate names at this point or open each one and use copy to softplan clipboard and bring them all into one drawing.  From there you could just move each one to its own building option

Edward, how much are your designs changing from one revision to the next? If the footprint of the building stays the same throughout the revisions and only the interior layout changes, here's what I typically do. My original main floor drawing I'll name '2.1 Main Floor'. Then, within the same Project, I'll use SAVE AS to create a duplicate, name it '2.2 Main Floor', and make any necessary changes. If I need to make further major revisions to the plan, or want to compare another layout design, I'll follow the same procedure and name the new drawing '2.3 Main Floor'. Now, if I decide that '2.2 Main Floor' is the one I want to use as my final drawing, I like to duplicate it and name it '2.4 Main Floor', so that my final drawing always has the highest number.

what about naming the one 2.2 plan you want to duplicate 2.2b

Yup, that would work too, Randy. Any kind of system that helps you remember which is the most current.

I tend to copy plans and mark them as Option 1 etc. Then when the customer has decided which option to go with, then I overwrite the appropriate plan. You can swap out the relevant plans in the model to suit.

I rarely have to restore Recovery files, and hadn't noticed that the numbering system has changed.

_{I didn't read this thru very well, But sounds like you need to open, create another Project, and save which ever revision you are wanting to use, Do a save as and open and save to the new project from this old project, then maybe change the name of it over in the new project.}

The naming of revision files hasn't changed. Having just opened an old project to make serious revisions, SAVE PROJECT REVISION works as it always has.

 

In your project folder, there is a folder named REVISION, and the PROJECT is created with its own Folder and the revision number incremented accordingly ...

I'm not sure how this is any different from earlier versions?

OK - I am back at it and need advise.  (I am still confused from the last discussion).  I just meat with a client and need to make some major changes to his project.  I would like to save a version of the entire project for my records - and in case I would need to go back to this version.  I understand how to save a softplan file, but how do I save the entire project?
