Why is the default for header set up as "spaced"?

How do you change this to always come up as outside?

... because it's only 3" wide in a 3½' wall. and the inside and outside line up? Just an idea.

Unfortunately from what I remember, you can't set it as default. I had to change all my openings a while back. The only thing I found is when creating a new opening and using an existing one as the base, it will have outside as default as long as the existing one you're using is setup that way.

It seems that in the System & Drawing Options, we should have an option under Material Dimensions>Opening Header to select the default positioning.
