I like the way the 3D view window looks with the shadows and such. Is there a way to look at the settings for the 3D view and make the model view look the same?

Can you clarify what you are asking. As far as I'm concerned the 3D view and the Model view are the same thing!

Ahhh, yes, the 3D window I've never turned on ... Sorry for the confusion!
My 3D view window doesn't have shadows. Not sure what the difference is, However, it doesn't look like that view can be altered.
If you want to change the model view, I'd open a mode that you NEVER use (in my case there's a few) ... and just experiment changing all the settings in the MODE OPTIONS for that mode, until you get something that you like, and then save the RENDER OPTIONS so that you can recall those MODE OPTIONS at will by reloading them.

These are the settings currently being used on the 3D preview. Hope this helps:
Shaded mode (Mode Options- Face Options Tab)
Anti-Alias = 4 (Mode Options- Renderer tab)
Lighting 'On' but Custom Lighting 'Off' ((Mode Options- Lighting Tab)
Display Lines and Display Silhouette ((Mode Options- Line Options Tab)
Auto Horizon 'Off' (Set-up Options)
