How do I change the dwg area background color from white to black?

go to the FILE / circle at the top LEFT

 

proceed to / options / system options / system options

 

go to ASSIGN COLORS  /  it's in there

You might also want to think about changing some of the standard colours too. I have issues with blue lines on a black background, so when I WAS using a black background, I set the default blue colour to something a lot lighter. Although by the same token, I have issues with yellow lines on a white background, so I changed the default yellow to orange in that case. You can set all the default colours to anything you desire.
