is there a way to have my new walls come in on the new wall layer, the demo walls come in on the demo wall layer and so on.

You can create new layers and set them as default.

As far as I'm aware, if you set the layer you want as the current layer, everything you draw - including walls - will be added to that layer. So open the demo layer and draw demo walls, then open the existing layer and draw existing walls then open the new layer and draw new walls. etc etc.

Change your active layer to what you want your walls to be on prior to placing the walls.

Have you considered using "Building Options" instead of layers to control your visibility? Building Options are much more powerful than layers. They control 3d visibility as well as whether the item will be listed in a SoftList report.

you can setup and use layers any way you want, however they won't automatically be placed on a layer. You have to draw them or assign them to a layer.

This can be done several ways. If your items are already drawn, then just edit one item and assign it to the layer you desire and then use repeat edit to add other items on that same layer.

Another method is to change the active drawing layer from "default" to the layer you wish to draw on, such as "demo walls" (you change this at top right of screen). Everything you draw will be added to the active drawing layer.

It would be nice if SoftPlan allowed you to define a custom layer in your wall definition setup, but it doesn't. I think that is what you were really looking for :(

Although you can’t do this with walls (yet) you can set default layers for symbols.

If you think about it, having the walls drawn on the CURRENT layer, is much more flexible than having a default layer defined for them.

In my opinion, even if you had the ability to define a layer is the wall definition setup, if you were drawing a wall on a layer other than "default" that should override the wall definition setup, or at least pop up a question, You are about to override the assigned layer of this wall, do you wish to proceed. I wouldn't see the wall definition setup overriding the user's selection while drawing.

What I usually do to add objects to a different layer  such as symbols, walls, windows or whatever is to choose "Edit" and just hole down the "Ctrl" button and click on all of the objects that I want to change to a different layer, and then right click and hit "edit & repeat. Then choose your layer under "Common" and everything that you highlighted will be placed on a new layer of your choosing.

learned something new....I never knew you could CTRL and select multiple items

Once I did select a few and right clicked, there was actually a "set layer" option visible.

Even quicker Warren ... once you have CTRL-CLICKED all the relevant objects, RIGHT CLICK and SET LAYER.

I always draw my items on the default layer or building option and them edit/repeat edit them to be on the correct layer or building option.  I used set the appropriate layer as active and draw the items but I never remember to change the active layer back.  Consequently I end up with a ton of items on the wrong layer and have to move them where they belong.  Mama didn't raise a smart man...lol!

HAHA ... I do exactly the same, so much so, that most of my layers are defined as a specific colours, so that I can Immediately see when I'm drawing in the wrong layer. AND I still end up doing it for a few items, and then look and wonder why they are that colour ... AHHH, the joys of getting old.
