What is everyone's method of handling walls up to a gable roof and such?  For example, let's say it's the typical space over a garage.  If it's a finished room, I will do an exterior wall on my 2nd Floor file and fit it to roof.  But in cases like the attached photo, and the space above the garage is unfinished, sometimes I have 'gable end provide by roof" selected.  Sometimes I've also done this with a hidden wall on the second floor, which is fit to roof.  But most times I feel like I have to constantly work at these areas until i finally get the right combination of gable, hip return, frieze, follow hip return, etc.

Just wanted to know if anyone has any general tips or advice on this.

Thanks,

Mark

Aggh!  Thanks Philip!  (newbie here).  hopefully i just attached to original post.  You can see the blank space above the far right window when "gable end provided by roof" is selected.  Obviously the siding is "missing" where the floor system runs across and there is not a true wall set to cover the floor.  As I eluded to in my original post, I know there are probably several ways and methods to get around this, but I was just curious on how most folks handle this.  Seems like I always run into issues with the frieze trim showing accurately.  Not a big deal to clean up some line work in a 2D elevation, but I'm trying to have my 3D models look more accurate for presentation purposes.

Besides the missing siding and varied spacing in the texture, your elevation looks nice and crisp. Good job.

I sometimes use a wall definition with siding only to fill gable ends and put it on a Rendering layer and only have it show in 3D. I also lock that layer once done messing with it and uncheck clean up to try and keep things from jumping around. In order to get it to show in 3D and Elevation you have to typically have your siding be a bearing material, or set a none behind the siding (where the studs or gable truss would be) and make that bearing so your gable roof references correctly. Like you said, there are so many ways to work with the model. I find that different methods work better for different designs depending on what I am trying to accomplish and what openings or other components of the model are nearby and may cause issues. Always a bit of a challenge to figure out the best work-around.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the reply!  I've definitely been toying around with a few different methods to get the job done.  I also read on a similar thread to try creating a plate w/ siding to cover the floor system, which has come in handy a few times.

Thanks for the comment on my 3D.  I've been constantly working on my renderings and think I am getting close to what I like.
