I have experimented with "Pen setup", and have edited line settings, but nothing I try gives me a nice bold line - what am I missing?

In Pen Setup, go to "Configure Print Pen Styles". Set one to 1.0 (or wider)

Are you talking about on screen or when printing. If it's on screen, you need to have in the Drawing Options the box for Display Print Pen Style checked. Printing will show the selected line thickness no matter if check or not.

Edit the line and change the line width to something like 1".  Then change texture to solid.
