Hi.

I got a mailer about updating or subscribing.

The subscription seems like a good idea but it's not clear what happens if you decide to stop the subscription.

Under the ownership idea, I get to keep using the plan/key without paying more.

Under the subscription model, do they stop the key from working if you stop the payments?

Asking for a friend. lol

Glenn

from the FAQ at http://softplan.com/?page_id=699:

Can I cancel the monthly SoftPlan+ subscription?

Yes - at any time.

If you cancel the SoftPlan+ subscription service SoftPlan reverts to the version prior to the SoftPlan+ subscription.

Drawings are not backwards compatible, this may result in an inability to access drawings authored in a more current version.

At the time of cancellation subscription fees paid may be credited towards the purchase of the current upgrade including any upgrades released while the subscription was active.

Subscription fees paid may NOT be credited towards the purchase of any older upgrade.

Glenn tell your friend its the best tool rent to own deal on the planet..  go for it. The micro key is also a good deal. I put it on my laptop a year ago and haven't taken it off. Travels real well.

I 100% agree with the subscription.  I did the math and if you normally pay for every other upgrade (which is what I used to do) it comes out as the same price.  The benefit is that you get EVERY upgrade plus all the other capabilities of the + program

I may be misunderstanding this whole subscription option, but you need to be connected to the internet at all times to take advantage of the bonus features in 2018+ right?

I tried the subscription for about a week but found it tanked my efficiency/speed. I attributed this to being in a rural area with antiquated internet service.  -_- Sadly this problem still exists.

Please tell me if I'm wrong. I would love to take advantage of the 'plus' benefits as I strongly feel paying for regular program upgrades is only giving you the minimum.

No ... you are NOT completely wrong, but not completely right either.

If you want to save to the Softplan Cloud, you obviously need to be connected ALL or nearly all of the time. However, like you we are in a rural location. Our internet is S..L...O....W..... and sometimes it just stops altogether. However, we don't connect to the Softplan Cloud, and generally Softplan runs seamlessly, saving everything locally. It occasionally will take longer to boot up as it looks for/checks the Softplan site for upgrades etc. but as I said we have all the advantages of Softplan+ especially the upgrades and new versions, and still have all the benefits of speed by saving everything locally.

I am in a rural area as well. I mostly have trouble with it not uploading properly so then the latest update of a project is just on my computer not on the cloud. It would be a hard decision to cancel my subscription because i would have to go back to version 2016 or buy the current version. Here is my current internet speed, I am with xplornet and have a wireless connection (not satellite)

Thanks Keith. A slight delay at start up isn't a big deal; mine does that now.

I was taking advantage of some of the extra content available on the server, which is probably what slowed me down. I never got as far as saving anything to the cloud.

I just gave up and paid for the upgrade to 2018.

Maybe next round I'll give it another go. I can see this is the way most seem to be heading.

Steven ...

That's blazingly fast compared to ours!

I get slightly better at work, than I do at home, but this is my home connection ... and it's through BELL.

Steven - I think I have you beat for slow speed.   (download = 1.65 Mbps  //   upload = .59 Mbps) *This is not a typo

I have Bell's version of "rural high speed"

I would post an image of the speed test to prove it but I'm not sure how to do that in this forum :)

Well at least I see Bell is consistently "crap" across Canada

The additional content is downloadable via ...  HELP > DOWNLOAD ADDITIONAL CONTENT on the menu bar.

Bet you feel a little bit better about your speed now, now that you know it's not just you. And my connection isn't RURAL, I'm actually inside the CITY OF BROCKVILLE, through the phone lines, and that's still the best that BELL can do!

Do you mean if I'm a subscriber I can download it?

I do feel better knowing I'm not alone in this battle. I can't believe a city (big or small) doesn't have better service. Sounds like Bell needs some good competition.

Speed Test 3.17.18.jpg

We live and work about 8 miles out of Bozeman, MT pop. 40,000

We are fortunate and the Cloud works great for us.

We have up to 125Mbs for an additional up charge.

I'm approaching retirement so hesitant to upgrade from 2012 but if I eventually want to just do the occasional job, I'd like my files to be useable.

A lot of my work is past clients wanting to do more on the original house.

That would not work in future with a subscription because, (perhaps a few years from now) their files would have been done with a newer version, not open-able in the "fallback" version after cancelling the subscription.

This makes sense- so that someone doesn't just get a short term subscription.

My case means either living with 2012 (all the clients are amazed even with this version) or springing for the 1500 update and living with 2018.

I'm told it will be worth it and I'm sure it's true. Partly I don't want to be faced with another new learning curve. lol

These tests were done over the span of 5 minutes or so, using various online 'testing' sites.

Now, granted I am connected to an office network where, during my 5 mins of tests, there may have been activity from other users here, if indeed that would have an on impact my tests (?)

Anyway, .. there seems to be a considerable difference in the results, .. even using the same test site twice
