How do I span upper and lower floor with a single window?

Like in a stairway in an exterior wall.

Edit the wall heights above and below the staircase landing to stop at the landing for each relevant floor. For example the lower wall would be 4' high and the upper wall would be 12' high with a 4' down offset (Obviously, calculate your actual landing height and adjust accordingly), but that's the principle.

 

You cannot put one window in two walls. If you don't want to adjust the walls, the offset the upper window down to suit, and use a cross opening to suit in the lower floor, but you may also have to cut the floor out so it doesn't show across the window.

 

Method one (adjusting the walls) would be the preferred method.
