I'm really liking the look of the sun shade option. It gives depth without darkening the page up too much with color, but for the life of me, I can't seem to get it to show up on my left elevation. Is there something special I need to do with the lighting?

It's possible the left elevation is entirely shaded. You can change that by experimenting with time of year/time of day or changing the direction of north.
