I am looking to add a second monitor and am wondering what others are doing for size. I am currently using a 23 or 24" and was wanting a bigger one to be able to see more of the drawing and also to get the benefit of 2 monitors. People have recommended a flat screen TV and I am wondering how large a screen would be comfortable.

Look into NEC Monitors, .. (if you’ve got the cash $$),

.. their 32” Desktop Monitors have a resolution of 3840 x 2160,

.. TV’s are much coarser, .. 1920 x 1080

going larger with a screen isn't necessarily an advantage without greater resolution, ..

1900 x 1200 is still 1900 x 1200 whether it's displayed on a 19" or 27" monitor

Edit, .. also check what resolutions your graphics card can support

.. invariably, someone will have a simpler solution.

Also remember if you want to see more of the drawing a bigger screen is mostly in width and not height.  You still will be cropping off the top and bottom.

Softplan on a flat screen tv looks HORRIBLE.   I tried it on several different tv's and it sucked.  I have two 27 monitors and love it although I would love to have 32" units...maybe when the prices come down a bit I will upgrade again

I agree with Sam, stick to dedicated monitors! If you use a TV then the colour differences between the two will be really noticable. I have enough trouble with the laptop and the attached monitor.

Not sure I follow that Jeff: 16:9 is still 16:9 no matter how big the screen gets.

I use softplan on  my laptop and I connect to a 27" Samsung and it looks great, nice and crisp. I would highly recommend if you like the larger size, very easy on the eyes

I use two 40'' 1080p  TVs set at 1920x1080 and I think they are fine.  The extra size is more than worth the trade off of a higher resolution.  My customers are always extremely pleased with their ability to see the floor plan and 3Ds at the same time.  It works well for me.....

I guess I can give an example. I have a house now that I am working on that is 38' (left to right)  wide and 54' deep (up and down as seen on the screen).  A bigger screen  or a wide 16:9 screen really isnt helping me see mroe of the plan since the house is deeper than wider.  I jsut have more space on sides to pull menus over to or similar.  Now to see a page layout wtih border (11x17, 24x36 , etc.) then the widescreen makes sense.

I guess I would really like a screen that automatically rotates (like an iphone) to get all the plan in :)

I appreciate all the input. Considering Douglas's suggestion together with the other input, I am thinking that a good choice would be a 32" monitor with a 3K resolution (2560x1440). I see what Douglas means when he mentions the cash issue. I am not prepared to spend $3 000.00 on a 4K monitor.

Amazon.ca has a Samsung SD850 LS32D85KTSR/ZA 32" screen LED-Lit monitor for $883.84 Canadian funds. This monitor has many very good reviews.

Verlin,

I use 3 - 23" monitors and am happy with that. Cheaper too!

every time i've looked at many manufacturers monitors at the stores,

the ones that always seem to have the sharpest and best color are the samsungs.

that includes sony and other top brands,  not sure i've ever seen a NEC

which seem very-very-very pricey.

The BENQ monitors seem to be very nice too. Fast reaction times as well.

Nice article thanks Thomas, getting set to stack a third atop my dual 27's.  GPU upgrade will be necessary for me to hit 3 monitors.  Lower will be my work monitors upper will be email, beam calc sofware and others stuff. (stock ticker)
