Is the new update backward compatitable with 2014 ? That is to say if I do a project in the latest upgrade, can an earlier version import and re-configure the files so an earlier version can "read" that info ? I am assuming that is not the case

I assume it is as in the past.  Any file opened in 2020 will convert to 2020 and you will no longer be able to open in the prior versions. So if you want to retain the original file for any reason, It is best to backup and store this so they will not open by the current version.  I always you backup and store safely anyway so that if a problem ever occurs you have an original file.

The replies you have already received are correct.

As in the past, once a drawing is saved in SoftPlan version 2020 it will not open in a previous version of SoftPlan.

I need to add this as I work for various builders and use different versions all the time ...

If you mistakenly open an older version file in V2020 immediately close the file without saving.

Go through explorer and delete the .spp file for that project.

Go back to the older Softplan version and when you locate the folder Softplan will create a new .spp file.

This should allow you to keep the older version file intact.

As I suspected....just thought I would ask....I understand fully the business decision....but I am like Steve, work on several different projects with different version of the software....maybe one of these days, but for now....2020 will just be another upgrade that keeps me on my toes....I am thinking of putting each version of the software on different jump drives and see if this is a good work around.

This is probably a good time to reiterate that it has always been recommended that projects and drawings be opened from within the SoftPlan program.

If you chose to open drawings or projects by double clicking on an individual file, understand that the file will be opened by what Windows considers the default application - which in the case of SoftPlan is the most recently installed instance (although you can change this in your Windows settings).  There is no way to assign files to open with a specific version of SoftPlan other than the default.  This is a limitation of the Windows operating system and not the SoftPlan program.

If you want to open a project in a newer version of SoftPlan while maintaining the ability to open it in a previous version, copy the project folder from the older versions Projects folder to the newer versions Projects folder, and then open it from within the newer version of SoftPlan.  To access the earlier version of the project, open it from within the earlier version.  As noted above, it is not possible to open drawings in the older version once they have been saved by a newer version.

Harald,

I appreciate your point and ALWAYS try to do this.

Unfortunately (or fortunately - depending upon your perspective) the default location for pdf files is the same folder as the Softplan drawings.

I allow this all the time because I like to keep the documents together.

What happens to me is that I look for a pdf file and it is frequently labeled so closely to the .spp filename that I select the .spp file rather than the pdf file and off I go opening a V2018 project in V2020.

This does not happen that often but when it does I have to back out asap and delete the .spp file.

Steve,

Your comments are absolutely correct in the scenario you outline - where no drawing files have been saved in a newer version of the program.

I just want everyone to understand that deleting and regenerating the project file (.spp) will not recover any drawing files (.spd) which have been saved in a newer version of the program.
