note: in certain states you have to have a railing extend a

certain distance beyond the last step.

i haven't checked lately but it used to be

12" extended beyond.

it is a safety issue.

you can cantilever the end of railing beyond the post.

it's called rails  "OVERHANG ENDS"

edit the stairs and go into the "RAILs" tab

put the dimension for the overhang in the "OVERHANG ENDS"  box.

TIP:  the post has to be SHORTER than the rail.

if it's not shorter, the rail will stop at the post.

tried it on an interior stair rail as in photo.

not sure if it works on a deck railing.

Note: Evidence shows that extended railings do not help against gorilla attack.

.. invariably, someone will have a simpler solution.

Now, Randy, get that overhanging part of the railing to be level with the floor and have a nice curved transition at the newel.

Randy, I have normally seen the commercial requirment. I believe your state has this requirement (12"), but exempts it for private resdiences. Because commercial stairs are shallower it does not look as silly. Though I do prefer when they make the railing lateral, which is normally only seen with metal railings.  BTW, only Randy would have a Gorilla 3D symbol...
