2018 to 2016 file.

how do I take a zipped file from 2018 and open it in 2016?

You probably can't.  They are not backwardly compatible at all.  The only case that would work is if the files were started in 2016 or lower then opened in 2018 but NO editing done.  Then if you delete the .spp file it "might" open in 2016.

 

This is a real shame.  Using Autocad ANY autocad file can be opened by ANY other version of Autocad all the way back to rel. 10 from 1990.  The files may lose a bit in the conversion but at least that's better than nothing.

you can, I believe.  Unzip it and save it where you want it to be (as a copy not overide).  Delete the .SPP file (project file).  Now try opening it in 2016 and it should generate a new .SPP and be able to work in it

It isn't just the SPP that sets the version number. If the individual drawings were created in a later version, you will NEVER be able to open them in an earlier one.
