so I worked on a project one laptop and then wanted to work on it on my home laptop, which I have done before with other projects with out issue. This time though it says that it is still open on the other laptop (it is not) and that the project is locked.  What can I do to fix this. I restarted both laptops, removed the key ect. It still keeps giving me the pop up that it is open on the first laptop.

Delete the .lock file.  It should have been deleted from the project folder when you closed it but for some reason it was not.

Are you working off a thumb drive?

I have been having the same issue.  At times the project is locked by a computer that does not have the project open at the time but had it open last.  The lock file does not delete.

If the other system did not close out of the project properly, the lock file may still remain.

 

If you get the message that the project is locked and you are sure that it is safe to open the project, the project can still be opened. From the Start Page, Right click on the project and select 'Open Locked Project'.
