What is the best way to create this dormer?  I started with a simple roof and cut in a false dormer, then cut the main roof.  My dormer wall and second floor wall did not join correctly and my window would only cut into one wall.  Now I have 3 wall segments, with the middle one taller.  Cut a hole in my main roof and added a shed roof, but my side dormer walls do not clean up with my main wall, and my dormer roof side is not correct.  Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

I think the way you worked it out is perfect.  Except that the shed roof doesn't have all the pieces on the edges.  Let us know how you get that to work if you do.

Two hours of tweaking got me to the first pic.  closed, went to lunch, opened and got pic 2.  Now what, Go back and do it all over, then make sure the roofs are set not to clean up?  PLEASE tell me there is a better way.  this is not that complex of a roof!

Here is the way I would do it.

Make your walls 4 feet and block cut the area with the cormer.

Add the 3 walls which are taller inside the structure.

Cover the whole floor with roof and adjust the reference circle to the side wall instead of the tall wall.

Add a shed roof to the 3 taller walls.

Add automatic hole under the shed roof and check add soffit and fascia to the hole sides.

Thanks, Steve.  Much closer, but I cannot quite get mine to look like yours.   I set the wall join to 0 for the 4' wall and adjusted it so the plan looks correct, but in the 3D the tall walls are not joined.  The only way my tall dormer walls do clean up correctly is to have all 3 walls set to hidden, and that looks wrong on my plan view.

I did not see a checkbox to "automatic hole" on either the shed or main roof so I manually cut a hole in my main roof.  Could that be the issue?

If I check my side tall walls to "fit to roof" they stop at the main roof and do not run up to the dormer.  Do I need to manually set that multiwall height?

I cannot set the bottom of the corner board higher than 48" (also the height of the main roof wall).  How did you get your corner boards correct?

Thank you for your help, and sorry if these are simple issues...

Found the auto hole command. Sorry.  That fixed the wall heights.  Getting VERY close!  3 remaining issues:

1. trim at tall wall will not go higher than 48".

2. tall wall must be hidden to clean up in 3D, but the front wall needs to be on the plan.

3. the sides where the roof is cut do not look right, and I cannot seem to select that roof edge to adjust the settings.

Thanks again.

1. I edited the wall and selected the 'trim/end options' tab. You can edit the height of the trim there.

2. I don't know why you need to have the tall walls hidden. Mine are not. If you edited the lower walls to be 0" join tolerance try adjusting that wall back from the tall walls and see if that cleans it up.

3. Select the edge of the hole - not the roof. Check the box for 'add soffit and fascia'.

4. You also commented on the fit to roof for the side walls. I used gable end provided by roof.

I have found that when I have a conflict with fit to roof selecting the wrong roof it is best to put the lower roof on a building option that is not visible.

Then do fit to roof and it will find the upper roof. Then turn on the building option for the lower roof.

Thanks, Steve.

I CAN edit the height of the corner board, but NOT higher than 48".  I change it to 60, save it and it does not change.  I edit it again and it is back at 48".

Wall clean ups is also still not working.  I'm sending in a ticket.  Even tried different wall types.

When I select the edge of eh hole (in plan mode) I do not get a checkbox to add soffit and fascia.

Looks like you've got it figure out..

sometimes in cases like this, it's been easier for me to just create a 3rd level, and draw the walls in on that level, and put the whole roof structure there...

The option to add soffit and fascia is in the "Edit Hole" menu instead of "Edit Hole Edge". Don't ask me why.
