I have a client that wants huge overhangs (7 ft)  around the perimeter that taper from 16" (heel ht) at the wall line up and out to 6" at the fascia.

The roof is a shed with a very low slope.

Any ideas how to do this? (Just the soffits, I got the shed roof.)

When I was in Lucerne I saw a civic center that does that:

I suppose you could make metal flanges. (hopefully he is not wanting it to be cost effective as well).

Probably plywood could also span that particularly with a light roof.

Sounds like a question to ask an engineer.

Ah, sorry, I meant how would one do the SP model?

Thanks for the construction ideas tho.

We will be undercutting the 2 x 12 joists for the shape and I can probably do an end contour on them but soffits don't do this in SP

I may try ceilings.

Glenn,

How about using beams with a profile for the ends?

Beams can be tilted/sloped

Thanks for the reply Rod

The thing I can't seem to think how to do is the soffit.

That is-* the covering of the underside of the structural overhang.

perhaps play with a custom profile as a FRIEZE BOARD trim...

or perhaps use a custom profile with DRAW PROFILE...

Hmm, good lateral thinking.

If I understand, do the entire perimeter overhang as a custom profile? (wall, frieze, or gutter)

I'll give that a try. I haven't played with profiles much but it sounds like it has potential.

I was about to resurrect my past (and very rusty) Sketchup skills and do a soffit model there for export but that sounded like too much of a relearning curve.

Thanks Tom.

if working on a FLAT soffit pretty easy by drawing a custom profile in the banding library.

than offset the banding as needed to fit under the soffit

for a sloped soffit,  not sure what the best way would be

i think toms thinking of creating a custom frieze profile might be one way.

didn't try that.

glenn mentions experimenting with "ceilings".  also might work.

time for some experimenting

i tried doing it with a wall with a custom profile siding and had some issues

tom mentions a frieze,  haven't tried that one

this is a good one. not sure it's as easy as it seem.

can't wait to see all the solutions.

I tried a few ideas but the roof slope screws me up .

I'm just importing a sketchup soffit model I did from the dxf model. (Then erased the model)

I'm just about to make a 3d symbol.

I'll post the results.

It didn't take as long as i thought in SU.

Proud that I remembered a lot of SU commands.

I like it Glenn! Does this design also have the roof joists showing underneath?

No, they want clear wood on EVERYTHING. Inside and out. I think it's going to be too much but it's their house.

I think I have the soffits coming down too far and will make the adjustment.

You need to check the symbol to show in section and elevation in the symbol edit menu.

Mark, I edited the symbol on the floor plan and on the main page it's showing checked in "Visible in all modes" and in "common" Softview is checked.

Did I miss something at the creation of the symbol?

Yes, go into the symbols library for the drawing, and click to edit the symbol, and make sure visible in sections is checked.

At least that is what I suspect is missing.

Yup that was it. Thanks Mark

I had to do it on the Drawing Options file which confused me for a minute or two.
