I am thinking about getting a VPN and before I do I figured it is better to ask others that are using it if it interferes with the connection to SoftPlan.

I wouldn't think that it would, as long as there's an internet connection for it to check your license when you open the software it should work.

I live 3 hours north of where I work and I use a VPN daily without any issues.  As Jon said, if you have an internet connection you shouldnt have any problems.

For those of you that use a VPN how do you see the performance of SoftPlan versus local?

 

My setup currently is that I have a NAS server at the office where I am now that I store all my SoftPlan files on.

 

Then I have an identical NAS server at my house that mirrors the files over the internet.

 

So when I am at home I have all of my computer files local on the NAS just like I do at the office.

 

I just bring my SoftPlan key back and forth with me from home to office depending on where I am working.

 

With a VPN I assume that you are able to leave the key at one location? Just because sometimes I do forget to bring it. Although it is only like a 15 minute drive it is always one of those things that gets me.

 

I just never looked into a VPN because I assumed that the performance would dip slightly as everything goes through the web? But maybe I am wrong. Let me know how everyone is using it?

I wouldn't expect to leave the key in one location, i suspect it will only read in a local port. You could try, but I don't hold out much hope.

Doesn't work you have to have the key in the computer you are using. I have the exact same set up as you and it works well, only I have a network key at the office and regular key at home (stays home all the time so I can't forget!!) One would have though that I could use my network key over the VPN but Soft Plan doesn't allow it, computer with the master key has to be on the same subnet as the terminals running Soft Plan, which really isn't right to me. I own the license so I should be able to use it where ever I want as long as the computer I am running Soft Plan on can see the computer holding the master key. So I had to switch one of my network license for a regular key which cost more. Some thing else I found out just tonight, I can Remote Desktop into my work computer and use Soft Plan from any where, not really smooth but it works if you need to get something done. But I can not remote into my home computer and use Soft Plan with a regular key on it, says no key installed. I know Soft Plan needs to protect themselves, but one I own a license I should be able to use it how I want.

So if that is the case then what becomes the advantage of the VPN over having 2 computers and moving the keys?

 

I am fine with SoftPlan protecting themselves with the whole key situation. I just wish for the few times that I forget it I could somehow log into the program with the key number or something. They can then check my log in over the internet against someone else using my key number while it is sitting at the office not being used or something.

I use my VPN to keep my files on syn and to print at the office from home. Twice a day I have an automated file syn that checks my project folder and all the important Soft Plan folders (openings, symbols, textures, ext) between home and work and copies files back and forth to keep everything the same.

 

Another funny thing I found. I can use Remote Desk Top to go into my work computer from any where and run Soft Plan no problem, it is on a network key. If I remote into my home computer and try to use Soft Plan it tells me the key has been deactivated, it has the micro USB key.
