I’ve been a regular “lurker” on this forum over the time and it’s incredible how many of my little issues I’ve been able to solve just browsing through the forums and I want to say I really appreciate all that so many of you have contributed here!

Now I’m needing to upgrade my computer and would appreciate some feedback from some of you folks more knowledgeable in this tech realm.  Below are two systems that have been suggested to me by my computer tech along with his notes, and I would appreciate any feedback you have, on the pros and cons of each, if the specs are bare minimum, average, or at the top end, etc…  Or if I should be looking for something totally different…

First is the Lenovo Thinkstation P520c 30BX001AUS. This is designed for 3d CAD work.

If you want to go with a gaming style computer instead then I’d recommend the Lenovo Legion 90JF00BRUS. Something to note, it’s not a “business” class device.  Otherwise they are very similar devices.

Try and stay away from the QUADRO video cards ... they are not bad, but not recommended for Softplan. Sofftplan recommends gaming machines, rather than business machines (or at least they did), but video cards are improving all they time so it might not be too critical these days.

... and just out of interest Allen, how economical was that desktop ... In guessing you didn't get much change from $5000 ... although I'm probably thinking in CAD$ ... say US$3600

I like the second configuration better but I would bump up the memory.

I would say that 16GB is perfectly adequate. However, memory can easily be added at any time if you feel there's not enough.

Check your current disk space to see if you need the 1 TB drive. I swapped mine out and just use a 512 Gb SS drive and an exterior backup.

if you don't want the old one, feel free to send it to me.

I'm running a really old system that I keep limping along by upgrading bits here and there, but the motherboards maxed out now ...

I have a AMD FX6300 (admittedly I could upgrade that, but it's not worth it) with a AMD Radeon RX560 and 16GB RAM ...

Are you really considering paying CAD$6000 JUST for the processor?

No...Im just messing with you.   Im fine for a while.  Honestly though, I run my computer very hard.  So had the titan been available when i built i would have went with it.  Ive thought about selling my gpu then buying the titan.

Really ... The increase in performance is almost insignificant for $1800 more. Admittedly it is better, but NOT $1800 better.
