This video will step you through creating a couple of different stairs where they transition in width as well as covering off the transition of the rail from open to wall.

That’s awesome - Thanks Jim.  I was literally just fighting with this yesterday and gave up because I was drawing the stair connecting the the first wider stair and it kept snapping to the wrong dimension.  I’m going back in to fix my model!
