Version 2020.2.8

It struggles in 3d texture mode, but it's now many versions old and I need to replace anyway:

2014 equipment:

Alienware X51R2

Intel core i7-4790k CPU @ 4 ghz

16.0 GB ram

Windows 10 home

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960

Where do I focus? Chip, ram, card? all of the above?

Jeff, yes.  Pick a price you want to spend.  I suggest build your own computer.  Not that hard really if you follow some of the major computer component websites.  Fastest chip, 16 mg of ram or more, best graphics card in your overall price range.  I usually pick components that have been out for 6 months or more to get a price break.  Get a SSD harddrive as they are not out of line anymore in price.  If you want the fastest with the latest out there, get out your checkbook.

I built mine 3 or 4 years ago and I haven't had any problems. I running the same processor as you are. I have double the memory you have and GTX 1080 video card, 1TB M.2 card  for my programs.

I think your system is fine but the weak point is the graphics card. Maybe upgrade to an SSD if you don't have one already. I built mine in 2013 and have a lesser processor than you do but mine handles SP2020 rendering with zero problems. I have a NVIDIA GTX 1080 and 32 GB ram though.

Get a good processor like a AMD Ryzen 3900, a great graphics card GeForce rtx 2060 or better, and alot SSD memory.
