The Canadian Building Code says that winder stairs must "converge on a centre point". (I had a building official catch me on this one)

How do I do this with SoftPlan?

That's strange our building code says we have to have a minimum tread width of 6" at the narrowest point on a winder stairs. Edit the Stair's and click on the Angled Tab and change the Stair Radius

Strange the differences in other areas/countries. I've seen some cool designs that would never pass in our communities. And other things that totally scare me.

When you edit the stairs make sure you have the cursor over the winder portion of the stairs so that the angled tab will show up. It should show a tab for the Whole Stair, Straight Stair and Angle Stair on the edit menu.

I agree Mark. The Canadian Building Code is a trip waiting to happen. We'll have to ask Mike Holmes about that.

Thank you Richard. That is what I was looking for. I would like the idea of a "minimum tread width of 6" at the narrowest point."

You can also make the stair radius and the stair width equal ...

Ben, maybe that building official was wrong.  They are sometimes.  But they never think so.

Hi Ben

BC code has winder treads min 255mm(10”) 200mm(8”) from narrow end of tread

the treads will converge at a point, just not at the wall, more like softplan does it

not sure if part 9 is the same for you but I thought BC adapted the national code.

see 9.8.46.3(3) and table 9.8.4.2(1) for private residence

also don’t forget continuous railing

hope that helps, but we all know the code is subject to the authority having jurisdiction.  Lol

Ontario code is treated the same for winders. They converge at a point in the corner of the staircase.

That's what I thought he was trying to acheive.
