I used the stock deck railing called "glass square" but of course it does not show as glass on my model. It looks more like plywood. Not Good.

Can anyone tell me how I can create a glass railing, both with a top rail and with out. Is this just creating a wall type and calling it a railing?

I am baffled why SP would not come with a stock glass railing. They are very common and have been for many years.

Use the glass square railing, but change the texture to a colour (I usually use black or grey) and change the opacity to 10% or 15% or so. Adjust it to whatever looks right to you. Experiment using different tetures and opacities to find what works best for you.

Thanks Keith, that works great.

Do you know of a way to have a topless glass railing?

Probably should have looked first. If you can't uncheck it you can set the dimensions to 0.

Or you can set posts where you want them & draw solids (panels) in between.

Set the dimension to 0" or .125" if it won't let you do 0". Or change the handrail finish to Railing Finish 20 and uncheck it from the Material list in 3D.

Thanks again. Very helpful.

I hope I am not of line here but am I wrong in saying shouldn't this have been more straight forward? How would I ever have discovered this with out this form to help? Tech support have been good but it just seems there are so many things that you need to trick the program into doing what you want it to.

Am I alone on this?

It would be nice to have more control in all aspects of the details of parts of our models. That said, I don't think there is a program out there that doesn't need to be tricked at some level to get what we want. Certainly ought to be easier. I hear the next version has some big improvements with railings. Hope this issue is part of those improvements.

I don't believe "trick" is the correct word here. You're not doing anything that isn't programmed in. Having said that, a simple checkbox for handrail the same as toerail should be very simple to implement.

I think that the issue is, that there are so many possible configurations that making edits to acheive the configuration that you desire is inevitable.

Just use the handrail as your glass panel.  Use the square handrail, set the thickness and depth to the size of the glass panel and turn the spindles off.  Use a railing finish different than your posts and set the texture.
