Can someone tell me how they handle this issue? How do you extend the rod on a ceiling fan without distorting the symbol? I have asked SP for years to offer multiple lengths in the 3D drop down menu...but crickets.

Good practice, you could create yourself a cylinder/fan combo symbol for various lengths you're looking for.  This image i created a 1" rod  centered on the fan then dropped the fan down some.  I usually just let the fan distort for time purposes.
