I was wondering the different ways folks are creating 3D chimneys for their elevations/renderings.  With all the different material (brick with row locks, siding with trim, etc) and variety of shapes and tops it has been a bit of a sore spot for me.  Short of building with blocks, planes and so on or finding a Sketch-up drawing online somewhere that sort of works what other ways are there?  Thanks.

I normally add another floor plan called Chimney Plan and use standard wall construction with a custom built 3D symbol as a cap - of course it's never shown on plans ... purely for the model.

I often do something along the lines of what Keith does. It allows all the flexibility of walls and trim to be used. I do use a solid or several for caps, etc. when representing and not worried about detail.

I use walls & solids to create the 3D and just put them on a layer that doesn't print on the plan. I would love more options on the Spark Arrestors! I've had to make my own in Sketchup, but the material selections for wire-mesh doesn't exist in either software. I would literally have to make it in Sketchup and I'm not going to do that for a small item, so I fake it with other materials.

Heather,  Go to https://www.sketchuptextureclub.com/and create an account.  There are a ton of free textures there.  You can download a perforated metal texture and apply it to a solid.  Remember that in order for transparency to work it has to be a png file.  This is a SoftPlan Cylinder with a black perforated metal plate texture.

And here's a seamless chain link texture that may work for you.

Don't forget to check transparent in the surface editor.

Here's some Chicken Wire if that works better for what you want.

Although to be fair, I've no idea what a spark arrestor is, where it goes, or what it looks like ...

Although putting complex Seamless textures on Softplan's cylinders doesn't work too well, as the cylinder is made of a number of straight sides, and the textures add to each side independently and it breaks the "Seamless" part of the seamless texture.

If you create a symbol or even a part of your drawing with a PLANE, you can add many different effect by using planes and transparent textures for fencing etc.
