What would be the easiest way to create a Chippendale pattern that could be used as a railing insert or a complete rail system?  Used on a non-walkable protico balcony so stair/railing codes won't apply.

Thanks,

Mike

I created a cool railing pattern by doing the following:

1. Draw it up with line work..

2. Use the Form Solid Polygon tool to turn it into 3D object.. (laying flat)

3. Export that as a 3D symbol in the 3D symbol library..

4. Create a custom symbol, and reorient the 3D symbol so that it is vertical in the Symbol Wizard...

it's a bit time consuming ... but the results look good..

I have also tried to paste an image of a railing pattern (with "scale" and "transparency" settings) onto the solid glass pane of a glass panel view railing.. mixed results..

That is HOT.  Great work.

I've used the same method for a number of items - Does anyone remember the Fypon Pediment design I posted? - But nothing as sweet as that - Brilliant work Thomas! Your designs always seem to be pushing Softplan's envelope.

While in a 3D tab (what we used to call SoftView) so that you are looking at the 3D geometry / model.... what you want to do is to EXPORT 3D DXF .. so, while the 3D tab is open: FILE > EXPORT > DXF..

save to 3D symbols folder (remember the name)..

make sure the object you want to re-orient is the only 3D geometry in the file (you don't want to export, say, the entire 3D house.. just the railing, or what-ever..)

then, back to your PLAN tab..

use the FILE > SYSTEM OPTIONS > SYSTEM LIBRARY to create a new 2D symbol for the railing (or whatever) .. use the SYMBOL WIZARD.. The wizard will allow you to LINK your newly created 3D geometry (the 3D DXF file you saved in the 3D Symbols folder) , and to re-orient that geometry, to the new 2D symbol you are creating.. the wizard will also draw the 2D line work for you..

sounds more complicated than it is.. once you've done it twice, you'll have the hang of it..
