I use BeamChek for sizing steel members. I use the free TrusJoist Forte software for sizing all my engineered lumber.

I wish that Softplan in a future release started paying more attention to structure and how floor joists put loads on beams and then columns to carry point loads all the way through the structure. It would definitely push it to the next level for me. The most frustrating part of the structural design is translating all the sizes of members over from SoftPlan to another piece of software.

I use beam calc.  It is pretty good.  Much quicker than doing all the math.
