Okay Softplan Users, since you've all been so nice to me on the forum, to celebrate my 1000th post, I'm going to give you a small gift ....

In a recent thread there was some discussion about Board & Batten Siding, and as a few of you may know, I did a little experimenting with some graphic design, and as a result here is a ZIP file containing my work.

This ZIP file contains 67 different colours of board and batten siding @ 8" o.c., all of which are completely seamless. 54 are based on MITTEN VINYL colours and 13 are based on MINWAX woodstain colours. These should enable you to coordinate with standard vinyl or stained finishes - These tiles have been created from a FILTER FORGE texture, and some graphic wizardry. Use them as you see fit, there are no copyright restrictions ... Just don't sell them.

Standard Disclaimer ... These are as close as I can get them, but please check actual samples, I take no responsibility for issues arising from their use. ....

If you use them, a thank you would be appreciated, and it would be great if you could post a 3D model view showing how they turn out.

I hope you find them useful.

DEAR SOFTPLAN ... If you wish to use these textures inside the program, feel free - if you think there may be issues with the naming, please rename them to suit.

Sample ... Annapolis Blue

Thanks Keith! I just finished a little tractor barn yesterday. Client wanted to see dark brown Board and Batten. Tried upping the relief depth and  changing to "Display Color". Not the greatest results. Here's the project with one of your textures. So much better. Thanks again for sharing.

Thanks so much for sharing!

I am curious if this was done entirely with Filter Forge?

They are still selling it at a significant discount and would definitely buy if this created the seamless tile and the color variations.

Thanks again!

Steve ... No, it wasn't, Not quite ... sorry. Although I dare say that it could be ... I'm just not capable enough with the program to program it to do that. Put it this way, someone made it do this ....

2015.10.22_13h04m25s_001.png

These are all variants of the same filter, created JUST by adjusting these sliders.

2015.10.22_13h04m46s_002.png 2015.10.22_13h05m14s_003.png

Although to be fair to you, this is the programming that produced it .....

2015.10.22_13h11m35s_004.png

I wouldn't even know where to start.

Back to the Board and Batten ...

The seamless wood texture was produced in Filter Forge, and it does have the ability to re-colour and re-adjust almost indefinitely. Once I had the texture, I imported that into Xara Photo & Graphic Designer. I then cut 4 sections out of it to make the battens, arranged them at 128 pixel separation, added semi transparent "glow" shadows to suit, and saved the original design. Changing the colour was done again in Xara, by replacing the light contone colours.

I believe that the work I did in XARA, can also be done in the FREE "INKSCAPE" - not quite as intuitively in my opinion, but FREE.

Here's an interesting one .... Lattice ... The lattice was created ENTIRELY as a filter in FILTER FORGE (not by me I hasten to add) ... You are able to make adjustments  to colours, slat widths and even opacity of the brad nails, and then save as a transparent PNG to use as a texture.

For those of you who want to colour match your trims, Here are the matching plain colour textures (for the Mitten colours) for corners and window trims etc.

See it pays to read all the posts ....

FIlter Forge creates the Lattice - and colours it. You then save as PNG ... Try these though, they will get you going at least.

Don't forget to CHECK "Transparent" in the Texture options menu.

SAMPLES REMOVED ... Obviously not up to standard - Check posts #20, #21 and #22 in this thread for replacements.

Okay ... This is in the way of a trial.

I have drawn .... completely, with no filters etc. just straight graphics ... Vicwest's SUPERVIC Steel Roofing (or possibly siding) profile in their complete colour range - minus the metallics. That's a chore for another day.

If you want to try them great, if not feel free to ignore them. Personally, I think they came out pretty well and what the heck. They are more free textures anyway .. Right.

Sample texture ... Dark Brown (Note: The sample is NOT Seamless, It's just a screenshot - Download the ZIP file) ...

Just a note on the horizontal siding that I posted earlier.

I make no claim to the original siding photograph. It was downloaded from the internet. It has been cropped, resized and recoloured ... extensively, but just to be clear, the original photograph was not mine. That being said, I'm not sure how the copyright applies with all the changes. If the original owner asks, I will remove the files.

HI Keith, thank-you for your generous gift of textures.  I wonder if you might be able to confirm where each of these should be placed wthin the Softplan files ?

And how do I deal with the Lattice Thumbnails to get them where they should be ?

Thanks

Jim C

Jim the textures should all be placed in the C:\SoftPlan\3D\Textures\Bitmaps directory, and beyond that, in any subdirectory you choose. Personally I'd make specific directories for the new textures. i.e. with the board and batten, I'd make a new subdirectory under Bitmaps\Exterior Finish\Siding ... for Board & Batten\Mitten and Board & Batten\Woodstain. Really anywhere that you can find them again should work, as long as you are in the bitmaps subdirectory to start.

With the lattice, Click the thumbnail, and in the pop-up, click the save "button" and navigate as above. Again, as long as you don't go above the Bitmaps subdirectory they should work.

More More More .....

Ignore the lattice above. It doesn't look like I checked seamless when I made it ...

Try these instead, based on the MINWAX colours I used earlier.
