I used to use laptops exclusively with softplan and I doubt any of them were as powerful as the one you mentioned.  I now use a Microsoft Surface PRO 3 when I'm away from my desktop and it will do anything in softplan except for fully rendered 3D.   It will actually render 3D but it takes hours even on lower settings.  With textured mode, I can rotate around 3D with clients watching with no slowdown or other issues.  I probably do half of my workload on this machine now since my wife and I travel so much.  I'm sure that laptop will do anything you want in SP

thanks for the feedback sam,  i'm sure it'll help many make a decision on how much they need to spend

for a 2nd computer of this type.

off subject:

nice to see you back in the swing of things after a few glitches over the years that many seem to have had.

I had a rough couple years when the market crashed and I had to transition from a builder that designed his own stuff to a full time designer.   By 2010, I was busy enough to survive....since 2012 I've been CRAZY busy.   Feels great to not have to chase every single job that comes by but I never turn any down...just bid a little higher on the ones I don't really want!

Randy-did you go with the Lenovo?  I was looking at those (for the exact same reason) but the reviews have not been good

Sam-On your surface, can you get upgrades online or download programs?  I know some of the surfaces were not able to do that but they may be the non-pro versions or older ones.

I am looking at getting a laptop within the next week and having a hard time balancing buying too much (since I will do most of my work on my desktop-workaholic otherwise) and having enough to go on vacation and responding to a client if I need to.

Definitely need to buy the Pro version with full version of windows.  The surface with problems is likely the RT operating system.  I haven't had a single problem with either of my surface pro units.  I will likely upgrade to the surface pro 4 or surface book later this year.  I travel extensively so I can't be tied to a desktop.

Thanks Sam.  Have you ever plugged a USB Hub into the surface to get more USB outlets.  Obviously, Softplan will take one spot and I have USB keyboard and mouse that I would like to use but afraid I will be short.  Really looking to pull the trigger on the Surface this week.  Your advice and review of the surface has been highly beneficial.

Yup...I use one every day.  I switch between two different mice to help with my carpal tunnel so I have two receivers there...plus my headphones...plus my SP Key.  Works well.

I decided to go a different route and ordered a Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 for site measures.  My plan is to hijack my computer from the jobsite and via a remote access program and use SoftPlan that way.  My needs are a bit different in that I need to access my "Point of Sale" software also which is only available through a direct connection to the network.   So, by taking over my main computer I am essentially taking my powerful setup with me in the form of a tablet.  I have done this with some success in the past with just my phone, so I am confident it will work better with the larger and more accurate surface of the 10.1.  There is a bit of a delay, so I would not go this route if you think you will be putting in hard computer time in on your tablet, but for site measures I think it will be great.

I ordered the WiFi version and will use a wireless hotspot for internet access.

How our world is changing!!!   I wonder if we'll be talking about VR headsets for SoftPlan in a few years...

Randy, just a quick follow up ... Did you buy the computer, and if so, did it/does it perform adequately ...

I believe that until July 2016 ALL computers running genuine Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 operating systems (either 32 or 64 bit) are upgradeable to Windows 10 free of charge.

I just purchased a used desktop on Kijiji, and successfully upgraded the Windows 7 Home Premium - 32 bit to Windows 10 - 32 bit, and then did a full clean install to upgrade to Windows 10 - 64 bit. Went really well. Note - You can only upgrade to the 64 bit if the processor is 64 bit capable.

Runs Softplan really well, even though I thought that the spec may be a little low - It wasn't bought for Softplan, but that's an added bonus.

I must say that I was dubious about windows 10, but so far the experience has been ALL positive.
