When I'm making a Decorative Timber Truss symbol for use in the Gable End of a roof I find

I'm not sure of the best way to breakup the linework so that I can Form individual Solid Polygons

to slide back together to make the larger whole piece.  Sometimes where  two lines

from pieces that are slid back together overlap each other they seem to make the symbol not

come out clean looking.   I'm thinking I might not be fashioning these in the simplest way ?

Any Advice ?

I try to make them out of the same number of pieces that I would assume that the carpenter would use. Probably just the same as you do ...!

Don't forget that 2016 allows us to make King Post roof trusses and we can now also assign a thickness (referred to as "width" in the Roof Options dialog box) to quickly create a timber truss.

Philip,

Can you please explain exactly how to do that?  I too have a decorative truss that I would like to create for my model, but not sure how to go about it.  I don't know sketch up at all.

Yes, I'd be interested in seeing that. Wasn't aware of it. We can create 3D's of feature trusses? Maybe I'm over thinking it!

Is anyone using sloped beams with vertical curve applied to create timber trusses?

I have done that in the past, but was never really happy with it. I prefer to do customs.

In Roof mode, go to "Framing_Truss" and draw a single truss where you want your timber truss. Now edit the truss and change the "width" to match  the thickness of the truss. You can also change the size of the various chord and webbing members. Finally change the Truss "Style to either a "King" truss or a "Queen " truss depending on the look your after. While it's not the fanciest looking timber truss, it can be done in less than a minute for a quick design idea.

BTW you'll need to toggle on the visibility of the "Roof Framing" under the "Extraction Options" of SoftView. You also may want to put the truss on a separate building option so you can control the display of the timber truss.

Okay, I was aware of it ... You can only do full trusses. You can't (as far as I can see) do a small - half height - version to use as a feature. You can change the height, but it ALWAYS resets.
