Morning,

Wondering what anyone uses to generate brace wall calculations for building department submittal.

We are designing with brace wall lines in mind but will have to submit calcs for permitting. Just looked

at the APA Wall Bracing Calculator and wondering if this would not be better suited for a licensed PE

to enter info and provide calcs for permitting.

May suggest to Softplan that if possible wall bracing could be considered throughout the design process,

such as Softlist, Res Check etc and allow for a printable report and highlighted corresponding walls upon

final design.

 Thoughts?

Steve

In our area pretty much every project has to have an licensed engineer stamp and calcs for the plans. Quite frankly, It is nice not having the liability associated with doing it on my own. The only problems I have are in how slow the process is because the Engineer's are really busy and turnaround time is excessive. Also, I end up having to try and read their chicken scratch and transfer the information to the working drawings.

Every project here in utah is required to be stamped by a structural engineer.  Even it it wasn't...I'd still make a client have it done...I won't take on that liability.

Hello Steve,

We use Braceline in our office. It is new and amazingly fast web app for IRC wall bracing! Then we insert it into our Softplan drawings as an image.

Here is the link:

Hope that helps!

We do not always get asked about this in our area but when we do, I go to the Simpson Strong-Tie online calculator that is available for free.

It does not have a ton of options for use but it can be pretty easy to get something for the township.

And when the township either wants more information or the home owner / builder want to do something different, then I tell them that they must consult a structural engineer for that.

It seems like it is going that way for more and more projects in our area.
