I could use some input from any of our users that know more than I do about hardware and how it affects softplan performance

I'm getting the itch to buy a new computer sometime before the end of the year...in anticipation of SP2018 release in the spring.  My current machine has been great and still does fine for most work, but when I do some heavy duty rendering, it becomes unusable and I end up working on my tablet.

For instance, I'm doing an animation of a master bathroom right now.  Mirrors on 3 walls, windows and glass shower on the other wall, reflections on, Anti Alias at 10....I started the animation on July 4th and its about 1/4 of the way done!!! (posting this on July 17th)  If I got rid of the reflections, it would have been done in a few hours, but it doesn't have the eye candy for the clients/potential stock plan buyer to drool over!!

The current machine was an off the shelf configuration,...intel i7 4770 4 core, NVidia 2gb graphics card, max ram that the machine was cable of, etc.  Was great when it was new in 2013, but I think its time for it to become a back up machine.

I've been patiently waiting for intel to release new processors and figured I would do another high end, off the shelf from Best Buy machine and add a few goodies like I did last time.  In the mean time, I have been looking at other machines online and found some that look interesting, but I'm not ready to plop down several thousand dollars and then have only slightly better performance than I have now.  Knowing that softplan is using the CPU rather than GPU when in rendered mode, I was looking for higher end processors and stumbled upon machines that utilize multiple CPU's.  I'm not talking 4, 6, or 8 cores, I'm talking 2 physical chips in the mother board that are multiple cores each.  The one I've been looking at is 14 core!  (Link below)  I'm not scared off by the $4,000.00 price tag....as long as the rendering performance is a serious upgrade from my current machine.  I figure a machine like that would easily last 4 years....thousand bucks a year aint bad for computer costs in my book.

So...if any of you are serious hardware guys and have some real insight into whether this type of machine will be a major difference in renderings or if its just money down the drain, I'd love to hear from you!

Seems like a really nice computer Sam. I don't know enough about hardware to make any meaningful comments, but do know enough to appreciate that that is quite a powerful machine.

Just as an aside, try changing the rendered mode to GPU on your machine and see if it makes a difference. I've switched all my modes to use the GPU as I find that I cannot tell a difference in quality, and the GPU renders faster than the CPU.

There are 10 types of people in this world ....... Those who understand binary, and those who don't.
