Good Afternoon,

How can I draw on a roof plan?  My roof looks perfect.  I can add notes, but I can not get to any basic draw commands.  For example, I want to draw an arrow showing the slope and pitch of the roof planes.  I created a symbol, but cannot insert it.  Sorry this is probably something very simple, but I have searched the help files and watched the roof videos.  I can draw it in the drawing mode and get it to display with layers.  Is that the best solution?

Dave

I'd draw it in drawing mode on a ROOF layer. Then using MODE VISIBLILITIES make that layer only visible in Roof mode. However, you will have to make the either make that Layer visible in drawing mode whenever you need/want to edit it, or CHECK DISPLAY EVERYTHING to edit it. There may be an easier way, but that's what I'd do.

Is there a way to assign a mode visibility to an item?  It seems like note automatically get the visibility they are drawn in.  I Think it would be useful to have that ability...

You can insert a symbol, or anything else as far as that goes, into any mode by using a hot key or adding it to your floating tool bar.  You will get the question if you want to turn on the visibility for symbols and you wouldn't want the visibility for all symbols on while in roof mode but you could assign your symbol to a layer that is only turned on in roof mode.

You could also use the "Generate Drawing" command while in roof mode to create a separate drawing but it will not update from your floor plan.

Sort of, USE MODE VISIBILITIES. In MODE VISIBILITIES, you can define virtually every object and say whether it's visible in a particular MODE - but you answered your own question. Unless otherwise specified, they get the visibility of the MODE they are drawn in, unless you check the VISIBLE IN ALL MODES that's available on some items (i.e NOTES and SYMBOLS).

However, like most of SOFTPLAN, there are alternative ways to achieve MOST things.

Hi Dave-

apologize if I am missing the mark here, but I missed some basics for some time, so hoping this helps.

Are you starting with in: ELEVATIONS/ VIEWS/ TOP and doing a "save as" new drawing.....call it birds eye or whatever

now open the new drawings from your "drawings" area- you now have a generic line drawing that you can edit and do whatever you want with.  With this, the "dynamic" properties are gone just like when you generate elevations into line drawings, so do it as late in the process as possible

hopefully this helps.  maybe you were looking for a more sophisticated way to do the same thing- I am just the poster child for missing the easy way and then working up from there ;)

The books/help are virtually useless, so don't give up asking.  Lots of experienced professionals here

Good call Terry, Reading the original post, I got transfixed on writing on the actual roof in Roof Mode. Reading it again I believe your method is more what Dave wanted.
