I've got a project where I'd need to change from 6" horizontal siding, to a shaker style siding in the same wall plane, I'll change patterns at the window sill, and what I'd really like to do is have this sill run around the perimeter, like a skirboard (with drip cap) where I make this transition. 

 

I'd like this to show up in my 3D models, question is, should I create a wall, or is there a way to manage this in 3D.

There are at least 2 ways this can be achieved, but as far as I'm concerned making a custom wall is by far the easiest (and most successful) of the two. The other way is by using banding and wallpaper.

 

My personal preference is creating Softplan walls as they would be built. If you are going to build with 2 siding types, the wall should be designed with 2 siding types. It also keeps the Bill of materials correct (whether you use it or not).
