Hi,

I'm probably having brain lock but I can't figure out how to dimension exterior walls from the inside of drywall.   It would be helpful when modeling existing buildings because I can do take offs from the inside - saves a math step.  How does one do this?

Thanks in advance.

Change the wall definition to shown dimension and extension on inside of the drywall, rather than inside of the stud.

I keep a separate saved wall definition that has pre - set to dimension from drywall. I use it for simple kitchen and bath cabinet layouts. Also handy for jobsite measures.

I turn off ALL defined dimension / extension options in the wall definition template, because it allows me to toggle my dimension / extension options at the drawing level as I am drawing the project.

I do a lot of remodel projects and dimension to wall surface (edge), because that is how they are measured in the field. When adding new walls for additions however, I prefer to dimension to the outside of stud,

because that is how the builder will measure.

It is a pain to always have to go to the wall definition to change this. If you set your wall definitions to "none", you can just to to the "dimension options" or "extension options" and change how you want the walls to dimension.

This allows you to easily combine multiple ways to dimension and pull extension lines.

Since typically you don't know what the construction of an existing wall actually is, I have a set of existing walls dimensioned from the faces in inch increments. Examples - 5" interior wall, 6" outside wall A, 8" outside wall B etc. This allows the finishes to be adjusted - the pens (typically grey) to be set etc. All without affecting any of the new walls - Which as Tommy says are dimensioned from the studs.

While we are talking about dimensions, it would be nice to be able to select a centre extension or an edge extension independently, without constantly having to change the extension options.
