Keith, .. either I’m not comprehending your approach, or it’s completely different to mine.
.. or are we talking the same thing ?
Are you able to set a drawing scale (other than default) for any given drawing?
Your scale factor of 1 has me confused.
…………
Most or all of my parent drawings are destined to be plotted at ¼”=1’-0 scale.
For details, I open a template with the appropriate Text, Arrow etc. sizes for the scale of the detail
Let’s say a ½” detail, … that will have 3” text (text in my ¼” scale is 6”)
I draw a 2x6 board end as 1 ½ x 5 ½ .. it plots to scale off at 3" x 11" (I know 'do not scale drawings, dimensions take precedence')
Anyway, ..
.. I use a scale factor of 2 for the detail when I ‘multi’ it.
The result is text, … that all looks 6” over the entire plot.
.. invariably, someone will have a simpler solution.

You're right Douglas, confusing multi-scale with plot scale. we're talking about the same thing. One of us is just not thinking clearly - Thinking by feel again I think!
Softplan doesn't draw NATIVELY at ¼" = 1'-0" ..... Softplan draws natively at 1:1. Having said that a lot of the standard settings are done so that it plots to a comfortable size at ¼" = 1'-0" (0.25) characters are set to a height that's comfortable to read at ¼" = 1'-0". etc.
So if you half the size of all the standard settings so a 3" character becomes 1½", but then you plot it twice as big ½" = 1'-0" (0.5). Do it again 1½" character becomes ¾" but then you print twice as big again 1" = 1'-0" (1.0) .... As Douglas pointed out.
So as I said earlier, I worked out a lot of sizes for each drawing scale. So now if I want to draw at ½" = 1'-0", I open the relevant drawing and start drawing, knowing that all the sizes are going to match.
Now MULTI - DRAWING is slightly different, as it's based on the multiplier of the scale you are printing at. Now nearly everyone draws at a standard ¼" = 1'-0" so in this instance, a 1" = 1'-0" drawing (again as pointed out) has a scale of 4. i.e 4x the base scale.

Not sure we are talking the same thing. I am asking about how to deal with a floor plan that is 1/4 on one page and 1/2 on another page (a cropped portion of it). It just seems SP should adjust character size so they remain the same no matter the scale. If I want 9 point notes, I want 9 point notes regardless of the scale I bring a drawing in at.
In order to do this for key maps or also large floor plans that I divide up, I have used different drawings modes. Because the notes change for the various scales that I am printing, I am able to easily create the right size notes for each scale of the drawings. It is also easy for me to work with it in different modes. This is one of the few times that I use the custom modes at the end.

Brian, Not sure I understand how custom modes works for this. Could you elaborate? Are you saying that you can set character sizes, etc differently in different modes?
You cannot set different character sizes but the way that I do it is that I use detail notes for the 1/4 inch scale drawings for example and then I use overview notes for the 1/8 inch scale key map. If I am using pointers then I need to come in and manually change the size of the pointer in either one drawing or the other. But usually I only have room labels or identifiers in the smaller scale drawing. Using the custom modes really allows me to select which layers are visible so that I can have Layer 1 visible in the Drawing mode and that has all my detail notes. Then I have Layer 4 which is only visible in Custom Mode 1 that has all my overview notes and pointers. Then when I add them into the sheets I can choose the mode with the correct visibilites and not everything is showing in both scales and only what makes sense.
