Just a reminder that if your hard drive is getting full and you want to free up space you can delete old

recovery folders. If you haven't done this before, chances are you will free up a ton of space.

For example, some of my old recovery folders contained 80 or 90 MB.

Search for the word recovery and then delete all the folders that are older than say 2014 or whatever..

dean,
about 15 or so years ago, you showed me how to find all the recovery files by
typing in > *-0*.spd

below is how you explained SEARCHing for all the recovery files we
could safely delete.

to all users:  i was lucky back in those beginning learning years

because both thomas roman and dean eckman took me under their

wings and tutored me > a lot.

thank you tom and dean.

i had the best > both are master softplan users and beta testers.

Recovery files deleting

Recovery files are named as follows:

Exterior 3D-001.spd (-002, -003, etc.)

It's the -0 you're looking for so, if you do your search for

*-0*.spd
it will find all recovery files except checkpoint.spd.
(The *'s are wildcards)
This is assuming you haven't used -0 in any of your drawing names

-----------------------------------------
dean,  i have windows 8.1 - how do i do a SEARCH for the recovery.  i tried a search (or so i thought)
with the *-0*.spd and it didn't find any recovery files
like it used to. i'm sure i'm doing something wrong in the search department.

Are you searching in a parent directory, and do you have sub-folders checked in the search options?

I'm assuming you're searching in a windows environment, not DOS (or PSEUDO-DOS as it is now): If it's in DOS, you'll need a /S switch to search subdirectories.

Try:     dir c:\*-0*.spd /s        in a "command" window. That will quickly show you if your search would (should) have found something. If you like you could then change "dir" for "del" and run it again ------- USE WITH CARE and AT YOUR OWN RISK .....

At least I seem to remember that, my DOS is a little rusty!

keith,

i'm not that computer savvy,

what is the parent directory and where is it ?

and not sure where i check the sub-folders

(i do know what the sub-folders are)

note: i'm not real savvy with tech language

but can get around the computer fairly well.

i can fix general problems but i leave the

heavy stuff to the techies.

we have an agreement,

i don't fix computers

and

they don't mess with architectural designs & the related drawings.

The parent directory in this case would probably be c:\softplan20XX\projects (where XX is the version number you want to check): The box to check should be reasonably obvious depending on what version of windows you are running .... This computer is an old (but trusty and reliable .... and tweaked to hell) XP machine that I love, and is nothing like what it was when it left IBM's offices ....!, so most people's version may look a little different but should be something like this:

In that case, I've no idea, but it should be something that bears a passing resemblance .....

HI Randy,

I don't do it that way any more. I just search for recovery and it finds the recovery folders and I just delete the entire folder.

Just be sure you are deleting softplan recovery folders.

To delete Recovery Folders, I just click the 'Start' button, .. Computer, .. pick the directory I keep my Softplan Drawings in, .. type Recovery in the 'Search' box .. right click the Recovery Folder of choice and choose 'Delete'

For multiple deletions you can Left Click your first choice, .. hold the SHIFT key and Left click your last choice .. that grabs all folders in between, .. for individual selecting, .. use the CONTROL key and pick out one at a time.

The CONTROL selecting can also be used to remove individual folders out of those you've selected using SHIFT

.. invariably, someone will have a simpler solution.

I'm using Windows 7™, .. the SHIFT and CONTROL while selecting files or folders is a Windows standard trick since Windows 3.0™ so I'm assuming that the capability is still there with Windows 8™.

As far as the 'START' button and searching in Windows 8™ I can't say, .. but the ability must be there somehow.
