Just was wondering if anyone uses Softplan for designing cabinetry?  If so---pros and cons please?

I don't do a MANUFACTURED kitchen specific layout, but do add a kitchen layout with base and upper cabinets to all relevant plans.

For basic layouts I think that Softplan is very fast and accurate. The only drawback would be the lack of specific specialist cabinets ... for example wine racks.

I haven't delved very deeply into designing specific cabinets, so I can't comment on whether the things I can't make Softplan do, are my limitations or Softplan's.

Having said that, i always advise my clients that the kitchen layout is diagrammatic only, and should be laid out by a specialist, prior to construction.

I do because most of our projects are spec homes. So unless the house sells prior to committing to the cabinets there is no buyer involved in the selection process. Also, it ensures that everyone is quoting the same thing

We have used Softplan extensively for cabinet design. We have been selling cabinets for some time and find the Softplan

cabinet design tools to work well. If there is not a "stock" cabinet in the Softplan Library we will design one to meet our customers

specs. The attached rendering shows tall cabinets on the left and right walls that were "built from scratch" using Softplans tools.

Dion, I have to ask ... how did you add the wine rack?

Never mind ... I just missed the checkbox.

To much involved...I let the homeowner or the builder take the plan to where ever their buying their cabinets.  Let the cabinet people earn their money. I layout the walls of the kitchen to a cabinet number, put the sink under the window, put the fridge symbol and the stove symbol on the drawing. Shes gonna change her mind 37 times between the time you show her the first draft and the time she actually talks to a cabinet salesperson. I don't charge enough or can I charge enough and still get the drawings to start laying out kitchens.  Auto cabinet rocks for a generic view.  Very nice Martin, Steve and Carla.

daniel,

i'm with you about designing (or lack of designing) the whole kitchen,

i'll lay out the cabs and appliances without spending too much time on it.

i'll also lay out the electrical.  enough to get permits.

reason for not going whole hog.  we all know it never ends up like we lay it out

UNLESS they pay separately for the design for the "WHOLE" kitchen, cabs,

picking out appliances, colors, materials etc

and separately for the lighting/electrical design, including picking out and shopping

for the products to use

each of these takes a lot of time.

most of the projects will include lighting designers, kitchen designers, interior designers, etc.

Hi there - does anyone use the cabinet manufacturers catalogs on Softplan and if so are the prices pretty accurate? also can you export to other programs - I ask because when I click on the PDF on this chat it takes me to the home page for Softplan rather than opening than opening the PDF
