In an earlier thread, I stated

"ONCE YOU GET THE HANG OF THE SOLIDS ETC. YOU CAN CREATE ANYTHING YOU WANT. OBVIOUSLY SOMETHINGS ARE A BIT MORE DIFFICULT THAN OTHERS, BUT ONCE YOU UNDERSTAND, THE ONLY DRAWBACK IS TIME."

I'd just like to reiterate that a little - The enclosed canopy roof was created as a result of a client presenting me with a picture he downloaded from the internet and said "I'd like it just like that"

2015.05.01_19h20m38s_001.png

Now obviously you'll have to take my word for it, but that's pretty close.

AND .... Every single piece of this roof was created wholly within Softplan - Okay, I lied - I didn't "create" the roof texture - I just added it.

Now I know a number of you have done similar projects, RANDY and THOMAS especially, but for those of you who don't work with solids, you may want to consider trying. It can take you to a whole new level.

There were numerous threads in the old forum about Logo's and Signs (or at least I think there were - Memory thing again).

With the advent of 3D text in 2016, these have become a whole lot easier ... especially just text signs.

These HOME HARDWARE signs were created in 2014 with just solids - now a little cheating, because the text was converted to lines in INKSCAPE, but the non text items were drawn - however, the principle remains the same.

As I said ... a whole lot easier with 3D TEXT

To anyone in Canada, these signs should be instantly recognisable. For those of you residing elsewhere, Home Hardware is a large national company "similar" to Home Depot or Lowes.

.... and if anyone from Softplan's listening .... Now a "Z" rotate would make things a whole lot easier again, even it it's only a one click 90°Z rotate ... I'd be a very happy camper. I expect Randy would too.

The 'red eyeball' 3D tool does that for you.

Sorry Douglas, obviously didn't make myself clear. I don't want to rotate the view 90°, I want to rotate a constructed solid by 90°, so that I can build a roof on a gallows bracket without having first to make the gallows bracket into a symbol to re-orientate it.

OK, .. got it, ..

I thought I read that 2016 HAD the ability to rotate individual solid objects, .. similar to Sketchup, .. does it?, .. or is it a somewhat limited ability?

It can rotate symbols somewhat, with the "SLOPE WITH REFERENCE", but no real "Z" rotate.

Perhaps the cross-over ability between 2016 and Sketchup is a short term piggyback with the ultimate goal to incorporate those features (Sketchup) into Softplan itself.

I'm sure I saw that AutoCAD had adopted some of Sketchup's abilities into some of their software.

Believe it or not AutoCAD has had most of Sketchups abilities for decades. I don't know when they added the "press/Pull" command, but it was basically what Sketchup models uses. Sketchup just allows you to carve out shapes on the fly rather that having to remove interefence conditions etc...

I am extremely happy with how far Softplan has come. But solid modeling is certainly not one of them. Importing Sketchup symbols, at least for me, is a huge hassle. At the very least, the ability to rotate on a Z axis would do wonders for me. Sometimes I just want to create a bracket on the fly, and getting that diagonal piece is a pain. I just want to draw my symbols, convert to solid and extrude it. The rotate it 90 on the z axis. Done...
