Hi all,

 

As a lumber yard draftsman in NW Iowa (flat ground for the most part) I don't often get involved in site plans. Typically the builder and foundation contractor go out with a transit and figure out elevations themselves. On this project, though, they hired a survey done and would like me to import the survey into the model -- what file type should I have the surveyor export to me?

I've never had great success getting more than the 2D line work from surveys (usually DWG). But, I think there is a way to import and retain the grade lines for 3D. I've had better success importing to SketchUp and creating a draped surface on the grade lines there. Then, I export as a symbol to SP. I think someone will have a better way though.

Use the File Menu at the top left corner of the screen. Select the Import/Export command and choose the Import .dwg feature. Import the file onto your drawing. It should display in a cyan color. Use the color that you normally use for drawing.

 

You will have to trace your site drawing over the imported file to produce your SP drawing.

I usually get the survey files sent over to me as DWG but I must admit I usually have to do a decent amount of clean up.

 

Some guys send me files that have other surveys in it off to the sides. Not sure what their file management techniques are.
