Would love your suggestions and work arounds. For 3D this works, but I have to to plans different.

Recessed windows are a popular & common detail.

I struggle with how to do this simply. The image attached looks good at most angles.

Smaller window

No size adjustment

2" frame offset (2x6 wall)

Larger window

Frame is 6"

4" frame offset (thickened wall)

For both I use a slightly different color for the inset frame vs the stucco, with the windows black for contrast.

I'm not sure what your problem is ... perhaps I'm not understanding what you need.

The frame is a specific width and the wall is a specific width. Both of these items are set up in your options.

You can edit any opening offset on the plan. Therefore IF you can do it in real life, you can adjust it in the images EXACTLY the same way.

I think I may be missing something. What is it you need to control that you can't?

To recess a window in the field, the frame around the window is recessed with 2x4s in a 2x6 wall for a 2" recess, etc. as shown. Sometimes we vary, but this is the general idea.

To show the recess in Softplan 3D I do a couple of things.

1. set the frame offset at 2" or more and color the frame of the window the same as the wall (or a slight contrast) instead of matching the window.

2. fir significant recesses, set teh frame offset deeper, make the window larger and the frame larger to show the larger recess.

I'm toying with the new recess opening, setting windows in these.

Looking for a process that is simpler than building a 2x4 wall for each window but there may not be.

Not sure it would work, but could you use a custom size niche set to only the depth of the recess and then a window with properly sized frame thickness and width in the center of the niche? It may be worth some trial and error with keeping each opening separate or allowing them to combine. I still think your framing model would be a mess, so the 2x4 wall within a 2x6 wall might be a more true representation.

We do it the exact way Mark described it.

Design Wall

Set Windows as desired

Cut wall on both sides of the opening

Replace with 2"x 4" align with the inside and its done.

Not fast
