I'm doing my 1st Garage with Attic space above and I'm not sure how to start.  I'm using Softplan 2020.  I have the 1st Floor of the Garage drawn and I've drawn the Roof System.  Now I need to show the usable space up there as well as place a dbl door in the Gable End for outside access - with stairs leading up to it.  I've never drawn this type of plan with Softplan ~ where do I start?  How do you draw the walls?  Are they just copied from the 1st Floor and changed to suit (like you'd do for a Colonial)?

Any help would be terrific and greatly appreciated!  Still really new and learning.  I have watched the training video for "Cape Cod Roof", but it's missing how the walls were actually created.

Depends on how you want to create it. Draw it like it's built. Typically, I show the walls for that type of construction as a single plate on top of a standard floor.

A major consideration is how you will construct the floor of the attic space.  You will be dealing with large spans and how you will support that floor is a major part of how you draw it.  I like to keep the walls with what supports it.  For instance, a first floor may have a slab foundation.  A second floor with have floor joists but you floor will serve as the first floor celing structure.  If you need to know where to place walls in the attic, determine minimum wall heights and drawn those in so that if you do a cross section you can move those walls horizontally to fit under the roof framing.  There are just so many variables.

Stephan all three sections of second floor in this framing were created using Softplan Attic trusses. The subfloor was drawn over the

main floor and off set to the second floor level and set as a level 2 floor. Bottom truss chords in example are 11.875", to match center

floor system, with trusses 2'OC using an upgraded subfloor material to span the 2'OC trusses

I usually draw a new file for the attic walls and play around with them and the roof framing to get it to look right. We have a lot of houses in our area that utilize their attic spaces as being finished and don't use trusses in our framing. So the knee walls inside are usually around 5 feet high and the ceilings around 8 or 9 feet off the finished floor with all sorts of dormers to capture more light.

so Brian, are you building the attic space rafters down for extra insulation?  I finally managed to get the ceiling joist sloping to the rafters except they are above the rafters, and now there are no horizontal ceiling joists.

the new feature in 2022 foor attic trusses is great but dont really use them much and stick frame bonus rooms in roofs. I cant seem to attach a screen shot to show what i mean here.

When using Attic Trusse command how do we create a hole for the stairs, the ceiling drywall is easy to remove when you use create hole tab on the Stairs.

But it doesnt cut out and leaves the Bottom Chord on the Attic Trusses.

Also when you create an attic space why does it seem to default about 2' in from the ends. We typically use the gable end as a framed finished wall.

I can set the width on the attic truss tab 14' typically which is great. should be a way to use the gable as an exterior finished wall.

In the real world you don’t cut off the bottom chord of any trusses.
