If you need a color or uniform texture from a manufacturer or other and they have samples on the internet, sometime you can save the samples separately to your textures but in some cases where they either have notes or other items on the sample or the case of a pdf, you can use a tool such as the "Snipping Tool" from Windows to create your textures.

You can use in the "Snipping Tool" the "Rectangular Snip" which will allow you to form a box in an area which has only the color or texture you need and save it as a Jpeg in your textures. In this example C:\SoftPlan2014\3D\Textures\Bitmaps\Exterior Finish\Aluminum-Royal\Commercial Brown #6973.JPG

In some cases, even if the sample doesn't look quite like the color, ounce saved it will. Might be hard to view in the sample included, but in this case the commercial brown sample didn't quite look brown but was the right color ounce saved.

So this can be used if you need a color but it's not in your selections or save you from trying to find a color that matches it. When using it in your 3D, instead of selecting color, you select texture.

It can be used with textures if the texture your saving is uniform because if you have variations, then you'll see the separations.

Hope it's a trick that helps someone else :)

I contacted one of our vinyl suppliers and requested the RGB or CMYK values for all of their products. It took a week or so but they supplied me with two Excel spredsheets  with the color values for all of their vinyl siding colors and all of their aluminum coil stock colors. One was in RGB which can be input directly into Softplan and the other was in CMYK values which can be converted to RGB with one of the hundreds of free converters found on the internet like http://www.codecrete.net/CMYK

The CMYK percentage values for Mitten Aluminum color "Tumbleweed Tan" is 30-30-40-5 which converts to RGB decimal values of 180-166-147

Can you save colors or you have to entre the RGB everytime?

You can save any texture you create (including all of the incidental settings for the surface) by clicking on the button shown in the picture below. Then you can load it into any texture definition later on.

The colours that Softplan uses, are *.aco palettes, and can be found in C:\SOFTPLAN\3D\COLOR SWATCHES.

If you want to create your own *.aco palettes, there is a FREEWARE programme called CYOTEK COLOR PALETTE EDITOR, this will even allow you to sample colours directly off websites with the "Drag to select color from screen option". So you can be on a manufacturers website, sample all the colours, and create your own palette.

If anyone is interested here are a couple of palettes.

Vicwest's Aluminum Colour's - MinWax Stain Colours (These are approximate, as the stain will vary with the product being stained) and just for fun ..  Crayola's Colour Palette.

EDIT:

JUST TRIED TO USE A CUSTOM *.ACO PALETTE, AND THE COLOURS ALL SHOW AS BLACK. NOT SURE WHAT THE PROBLEM IS. HAVE CONTACTED TECHNICAL SUPPORT. WILL KEEP YOU POSTED.

If you really want to get adventurous, there are a couple of graphic editors that will allow you to desaturate or change to black and white a texture (i.e WOOD), once it's been desaturated, you can then add a contone (like MinWAX) over the top of the grain to make your own textures. I use XARA Photo and Graphic Designer, but this is NOT Freeware. Not sure what you can find free out there, you may have to dig, but will probably be able to find something (or a combination of somethings) that will do the job.

EDIT:

TRY "GIMP" AND USE THE DESATURATE AND TINT COMMANDS.

If you want to do a little experimenting, you can download FILTER FORGE FREEPACK 1 - METALS. This is a standalone programme.

These 7 basic metal textures can be changed in an almost infinite way and saved as SEAMLESS METAL TEXTURES.

There are a number of manufacturers who have *.aco files on their websites for download. Mostly paint manufacturers. For example RESENE

Update:

Technical support have no idea why these *.aco files don't work, and have passed them to development for review.

As soon as I find out what the issue is, I will let you know.
