All of my symbols are printing as black solids.  I have checked and unchecked the boxes in the Assign colors menu to try to remove the symbol paint.  I have also tried editing each symbol, yet i cannot find anything that would affect the symbol paint.  Surely there must be a way to fix this!

just guessing  ----open up option- then visible items to the left-, and at left under assign colors, maybe the symbol paint is checked and has a black color, then under drawing the "paint in symbol is checked.

I have tried ecery combination of checking and unchecking the symbols paint.  I have tried assigning the paint to clear (?) or white.  Nothing seems to change this.

OK, Fred, I found it.  In the Options > Visible Items , "Paint in Symbols" was checked.  I am new to 2014 (using it sporadically) and this option was not in the previous SP versions I worked with.
